The follow-up email to my professor about privacy between students.

I’m cc’ing the Chancellor and sexual harassment office on this email. It has nothing to do with you. In my school of thought, there is an issue here that they might want to address at all the schools. I’ve emailed both offices about privacy previously.

Thank you for the quick response. I appreciate the opportunity to remain silent during class. Thank you for understanding. Hopefully, we will be back in class in the next semester or two (or three). Once back, I’ll have my hand up every day as usual. I always participate in class. I love school.

On to the issue of group chat. I don’t want to be in a web-based group chat system where I’m exposed to student’s personal information, full names, emails, phone numbers, etc. I don’t want to know the personal information of students and I don’t want them having mine. I treat everyone with the utmost respect. I also want my privacy. I know I’m being overly cautious but I’d rather be safe than sorry.

From a strategy standpoint, I’m 10X better as a student now than I was 6 or 12 months ago. I sign up for extra classes every semester just in case I have to drop 1 or 2. I want to be in this class because the information looks phenomenal. I have the book, I’m ready to dig in. Worst case scenario, if I have to drop the class, it’s OK.

My question is this. You sent a syllabus with the whole class explained perfectly. I have your email address. I’m going to be online watching all the classes. Can I please be excused from the group chat?

I’m working on technology startups. I can make a big breakthrough at any time. I don’t want to jeopardize it. A big part of what is keeping me going and in the game is CUNY. I love CUNY, I’m going to graduate school at CUNY, who knows maybe I’ll work for CUNY one day.

I have computer equipment, phone, bills paid, food in my stomach all because of CUNY. That is why I have a 4.0 GPA with a 100% attendance record and I treat all CUNY staff and students with the utmost respect at all times. Plus I’m a respectful person. The support staff at CUNY and the teachers are remarkable.

I don’t want to know the student’s full names and email addresses in any of my classes. School is my number 1, 2, 3 priority. I’m not in a rush when it pertains to submitting quality schoolwork to teachers. If I have the occasional question, I’ll email you.

I don’t feel comfortable with group chat between students. I just received the notification to join and there are student’s full names in the email. I don’t want that information.

Yesterday I received an email from a teacher with every single student’s full name and email address that is in my class. Now I’m receiving an invitation to join a group chat which I can see from the invite has every student’s full name and maybe additional information.

With social media and people looking each other up, I think it’s a potential liability that student’s personal information is being shared with classmates. It’s none of my business, it’s just my opinion. I keep quiet about my views at school. I have no choice but to explain myself here because I want to stay in this class.

If there is any way to be a part of this class without being exposed to the personal information (full name, any form of contact) of the student’s please let me know. Last year I stayed clear of all student’s personal information. As I mentioned I earned a 4.0 GPA with 100% attendance and 27 credits earned. Even when my GPA drops, the main thing is to give college my all and enjoy learning.

I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t party. I don’t have a criminal record. I live my life all the way on the cautious side.

Please advise.

Thank you and have a great day.

Ever upward,

Mark Pine

I love CUNY.
